How Does A Furnace Work?

It helps to understand how your furnace actually heats your home. This is especially true if you are having trouble heating your house.

Troubleshoot The Simple First

Everyone can check the simple things first without needing to understand even the basic why or how. If your furnace is not performing the way you want, you should start with these two simple fixes.

First, check the batteries of your thermostat. If these are nearing the end of their service life, they may not send the right signal to the furnace. This can result in the unit not turning on at the right time or even not producing the right amount of heat.

Second, check your furnace filter. Air cannot flow through the system effectively with clogged filters. This can also put additional strain on some components of your heater and cause ineffective heating.

If both of these components are good, it is time to call a trained professional. Be sure to read the process below so that you understand what your repair person tells you.

How Your Furnace Works

The furnace is a simple system and easy to understand. However, some components are delicate, complex, and can be dangerous if they malfunction. This is why a trained professional should work on your furnace. To help you prepare for that visit, here is a basic overview of how the unit works.

First, the furnace must produce heat. This happens when the thermostat sends a signal to the furnace, causing the burners to light. This generates heat within the combustion chamber that travels up to the heat exchanger.

The circulation fan starts when the exchanger reaches the correct temperature. This pushes air through the exchanger, warming it up. It then pushes the warm air out into the house.

As the circulation fan continues to run, it is also drawing cooler air into the return duct to feedback to the exchanger. Your furnace filters are generally located somewhere in the return system.
